  1. A collection of the teachings of Muhammad and
  2. stories about his life, regarded by Muslims
  3. as a guide to living second only to the
  4. Koran. The teachings were at first
  5. transmitted orally, but this led to a large
  6. number of Hadiths whose origin was in doubt;
  7. later, scholars such as Muhammad al-Bukhari
  8. (810-870) collected together those believed
  9. to be authentic, and these collections form
  10. the Hadith accepted by Muslims today.
